さて、今回の映画は「機動戦士ガンダムSEED FREEDOM」です。
C.E.(コズミック・イラ)75、ギルバート・デュランダル(声・池田秀一)がキラ・ヤマト(声・保志総一朗)により討たれたことにより、彼が提唱した「デスティニープラン」は潰えた。しかしその後の混乱は一向に収まる気配を見せず世界には紛争が溢れていた。反コーディネーター思想団体「ブルーコスモス」の先鋭化や新興国の台頭がもたらす激化する戦闘を憂いた者たちによりラクス・クライン(声・田中理恵)を初代総帥とした世界平和監視機構「コンパス」が設立され、キラ達はそのメンバーとして世界各地の紛争調停のために奔走する日々を送っていた。

「機動戦士ガンダムSEED」とその続編「SEED DESTINY」は21世紀に入ってからのガンダムブランドを牽引して来たと言って過言ではない作品です。この大ヒットが無ければその後の「00」や「UC」「鉄血のオルフェンズ」などの作品群が生まれていたかどうか定かではありません。その「SEED」の劇場版製作の第一報があったのは2006年。しかしその後は特別総集編「スペシャルエディション」やHDリマスター版の製作、「スーパーロボット大戦」や「G-GENERATIONS」「EXVS」などのゲーム作品への登場などで作品世界が広がる一方でようとして劇場版の続報が無く、2016年にメインライターであった両澤千晶の病没もあり、もう企画自体が凍結されてしまったのではないかと思っていました。そこから実に18年の時を経て今になって遂に公開まで漕ぎ着けようとは。もう何かの奇跡でも見ているかのよう。両澤千晶没後は夫である監督福田己津央と「SEED」「SEED DESTINY」のノベライズを担当した後藤リウが共同でシナリオを書き継ぎ完成させたそうです。
最早待ちくたびれたという言葉すら生温いほど待っただけの甲斐はあった、素晴らしい出来栄えの快作です。観たかったものがほぼ全部詰まってる逸品に仕上がっていました。
物語は前半じっくりとした語り口で状況を作り上げ、後半大きくギアチェンジして一気呵成に畳み掛けてくる構成をしています。前作と言うべき「SEED DESTINY」では混迷と迷走を極め作り手すら落とし所を見失っているかのようでしたが今作ではキラとラクスのラブストーリーを主軸とし迷いの無い足取りで大団円まで疾走します。
タイトルの「FREEDOM」は、主人公キラが駆るガンダムの名がフリーダムであると言うことのほかに文字通りの「自由」を意味しているのでしょう。今作のキラは世界を背負い数々の規範に束縛された状態からの旅路を辿ることになります。更に言えばシン・アスカ(声・鈴村健一)も過去の自分から少し自由になって明るさを取り戻していますし、後半に差し掛かったあたりから登場するアスラン・ザラ(声・石田彰)に至ってはもう色んな意味でフレームインしてるだけで面白くなるレベルの自由そのものの振る舞いを見せます。
そんな彼らがまさに縦横無尽に躍動するクライマックスは、アイディアも作画のカロリーも圧倒的。1stガンダムのオマージュを随所に散りばめアクセントとしつつ、恐らく見せたいビジュアルから逆算して組み上げいるであろう絵コンテとキャラクターのドラマが相乗効果を生み、ボルテージが天井知らずに上がって行きます。このアッパーテンションはほとんどお祭り映画のノリ。続編であり完結編であると同時に20年越しの同窓会でもあるこの作品を最高の形でエモーションを醸成してくれます。
作り手の見せたいものと受け手である観客が見たいものがこれほど噛み合うのも意外と少ないのではないでしょうか。そもそもその機会自体が無いだろうと諦めていただけになおさら喜びに満ち溢れています。かつて「SEED」にハマった人も不満を持っていた人も、そしてこれから触れるであろう人も受け止めるだけの度量を持った極上のエンターテインメント。こういうのはもう上映期間中にスクリーンで観て何ぼです。特に当時ハマっていた方は何としても観に行きましょう。この祭りを素通りするなど勿体無い。
